Guidance on Sustainable Cleaning
The joint BACS/UK Cleaning Products Industry Association (UKCPI) Public Procurement Task Force has published guidance on Sustainable Cleaning for users of professional cleaning products. This guidance addresses factors affecting the overall sustainability of cleaning and was developed following on from publication in 2006 of the Guidance for Responsible Public Procurement of Cleaning Products leaflet. This drew on published scientific risk assessments and focused on the ingredients of cleaning products used in the UK in the industrial and institutional (I&I) and janitorial markets, with the aim of helping Local Authorities, and other organisations, readily purchase cleaning products which are safe for human health and the environment. The latest guidance on Sustainable Cleaning considers impacts at each stage of the life cycle of cleaning products from product design, raw materials selection and product manufacture to use and disposal. This guidance was presented in draft form to the UK Chemicals Stakeholder Forum (CSF) at its meetings in October 2007 and, amended to reflect comments made, in January 2008. The guidance has been welcomed by Defra as part of its committment to support sustainable public procurement in the UK in line with its strategy for promoting sustainable development across Government.
